GARY NIX
“Short Story – Long Life”
From the tiny town of Bay, Arkansas, a great singer/songwriter/performer began a stellar career! That man is Gary Nix, and while he can name a very long list of other well known musicians with whom he has traveled many roads, that is only a small part of his life story – a story that includes serving his country in the USAF during the Vietnam War.
Growing up in Bay’s in its small, tight-knit family/community has anchored Gary over the years – it is always his beloved HOME! It was here that he started singing in church, and where he also sang in the Arkansas UIL (University Interscholastic League) award-winning high school band.
Gary went on to study music at the School of the Ozarks, a Classical Christian School, located in Point Lookout, Missouri. It was here that Gary started a band playing country and rock in the clubs around nearby Branson, Missouri. A fond memory was playing with the Wilkinson Brothers show in Branson.
In the Branson music scene from 1981-1983, Gary met many music legends and worked shows with them. Most notable were: Merle Haggard, The Kendalls and Narvel Felts. As this era ended with personal changes needing to be made, by 1984 Gary had moved to Lubbock, Texas, which opened a whole new world of music for him – one that has lasted until today.
As Gary made Lubbock his home, he also built an “in demand” band called, “West Texas.” Over the last 30+ years, Gary has opened shows with his band for the late Waylon Jennings, Gary Morris, Marty Haggard, Gene Watson, plus others, and kept a full-time, five piece band playing all over Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Arkansas. His shows bring music that fills the dance floor, but also allows his fans to appreciate the songs he has written and ones he can deliver so beautifully accompanying himself on piano. The diversity and caliber of talent in his band have sustained his full-time music career as an independent artist/musician.
Most recently Gary is proud to present two new songs recorded at Houston’s premier Wire Road Studio with the esteemed Andy Bradley producing. Gary performed the two new songs at the CMA of Texas Awards Show, October 2025, at the Dosey Doe Barn in The Woodlands, Texas. Here we are in 2026, and Gary is set to begin the exposure of the new songs: “Where the Blacktop Ends” and “I Will Write A Song For You.”
The CMA of Texas has presented Gary Nix two awards: 2020 TEXAS TROUBADOUR Award and 2021 ALBUM of the Year – both awards presented at the CMA of Texas Awards Show at Cook’s Garage in Lubbock, Texas.
